Urgent need for unemployment insurance law
KUWAIT: A senior Manpower and Government Restructuring Program (MGRP) official said on Thursday that legislation to provide Kuwaitis with unemployment insurance payments is more essential than ever, especially given the concerns at increasing numbers of citizens leaving their private sector jobs to pursue positions in the public sector.
Speaking to Al-Qabas on condition of anonymity, the MGRP official explained that the lack of existing legislation of this nature threatens to ensure that the MGRP's efforts over the last nine years to encourage more Kuwaiti citizens to work in the private sector will have been made in vain.
A bilateral committee consisting of representatives from the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Public Institution For Social Security ( PIFSS ) recently put forward a draft proposal for such the introduction of unemployment insurance. This would ensure that those Kuwaitis dismissed from private sector posts would automatically receive regular unemployment benefit payments within six months of their dismissal.
