UNIFIL restricts movement around Lebanon

18 August 2012

BEIRUT: UNIFIL has put a stop to its contingents’ movements between south Lebanon and Beirut due to the security situation brought about by the recent spate of kidnappings. According to the Central News Agency, the U.N.’s peacekeeping force has limited its patrols to the area south of the Litani River and ended its movement north of the river. UNIFIL personnel enter and exit Lebanon through Beirut’s international airport, but due to the repeated blocking of the airport road, the body has halted such movement. Lebanese security forces increased their protection of the Turkish contingent’s site in the Tyre village of Shaitieh after the Meqdad clan kidnapped a Turkish national Wednesday.
