Tourism to create 230,000 jobs in 5 yrs for Saudis: SCTA chief

By By GALAL FAKKAR JEDDAH: President of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) Prince Sultan bin Salman has said that the tourism sector would offer 230,000 job opportunities to Saudis over the next five years.

"The tourism sector has achieved 26 percent Saudization which is higher than the achievement of any other sector in the Kingdom," the prince said while opening a forum on furnished residential units at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday.

"The SCTA has formulated a number of regulations and many of them have been approved by higher authorities, while the remaining ones will be discussed later," Prince Sultan said.

He added that the SCTA has started reaping the fruits of its past efforts to promote domestic tourism with more employment opportunities and youths are showing great interest in joining the tourism sector.

A national company with state participation will be established to promote domestic tourism.

The company will launch huge tourism projects and also strive to find local financing sources for projects particularly in the four areas that need to be developed for the promotion of future tourism: tourist accommodation, exhibition, conferences and heritage.

The SCTA chief added that the heightened tourist awareness of Saudis left no option for the commission and investors in the sector but to develop the sector to a very high level to make it a value-added productive sector.

He said the proposed company will not be a competitor to the private sector but will act as a facilitator.

Finding local sources for projects in the Kingdom is of paramount importance, said the prince, particularly after the achievements in the Saudization process.

He also expressed hope that the tourism sector would receive support from public and private sectors to finance its current and future projects.
