Muscat: Shell Development Oman's (SDO) "Training for Employment" initiative has yielded excellent results since it takes the extra step of training people, while promising them a job, said John Blascos, general manager and country chairman of Shell Development Oman.
Speaking after the signing ceremony at the company's office in Mina Al Fahal for five new training programmes, worth OMR304,450, to train 96 Omanis for employment, John Blascos noted, "We also use new tools and techniques while imparting training, and AutoCAD is one of them. Eager to rehabilitate people with special needs and to support their integration into society as a productive group, the company also trains such people, assuring them of a job."
He added, "By working closely with the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (Opal) and other partners, not only will we be filling important gaps in the job market but we will also be filling them with suitable, well-trained candidates who are ready to enter the job market and put their new skills to work." This social investment initiative is aimed at helping young Omanis to acquire the necessary skills to enhance their employment and self-employment potential.
As part of this initiative, SDO works to secure available jobs in the marketplace and then collaborates with prospective employers to train suitable candidates for these jobs. Upon successful completion of their training, the trainees are guaranteed employment and competitive salaries in reputable private-sector establishments.
In 2012, the SDO helped more than 130 young Omanis secure jobs through this effective scheme. Young Omanis were trained in various disciplines, such as rigging, metal-structure installation, automobile mechanics, and AutoCAD.
Ayman Ghanayem, general manager of Technical and Administrative Training Institute, one of the training providers, stated they would conduct a non-destructive testing training programme for 15 secondary-school graduates. He remarked, "We have been associated with Shell since 2005, and each year, we train 40 people.
We believe that acquiring the right skills will benefit job-seekers." Mohammed Said Al Badawi, institute director of National Training Institute, noted that they would impart technical and commercial training to people: "The safety officer training programme and the accountancy skills training programme are two of our current programmes with Shell."
This signing ceremony celebrates five new programmes that will be introduced in 2013. These programmes, running for six months each, will secure jobs for 96 young Omanis. These jobs will give young, unemployed people a chance to lead their lives independently and with pride.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Manpower, all of the above programmes will be funded by SDO and conducted under the direct supervision of Opal.
Mohamed Al Harthy, chief executive officer of Opal, stated, "We are grateful for Shell's ongoing participation in building national capabilities.
Funding these programmes means providing students with an opportunity to empower themselves, create a better future, and participate in the nation's prosperity."
