12 May 2011
Abu Dhabi - UAE: The nurses of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) managed by Cleveland Clinic marks today the International Nurses Day celebrated annually across the world on 12 May, which marks the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing as a profession, and creator of the original system of nursing practice based on epidemiological data. SKMC is part of the SEHA Health System and is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Nurse's Day is the time to recognize and thank nurses everywhere for their hard work and commitment to making a difference in the lives of patients and for giving of their mind, spirit and heart. The theme for Nurses Day at SKMC this year is "INCREASING ACCESS AND EQUITY". SKMC's nurses from all nursing specialties have organized a number of different activities and celebrations.  Presentations were organized highlighting the strength of SKMC nurses' ability to apply performance improvement principles to ensure our patients have access to care services. The program included presentations on nurses' role in finance, and introducing the new Institute Model that SKMC has adopted from Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. In addition, there was two fun 'shows', one of which included a quiz competition to determine which group of nurses from each Institute at SKMC has the greatest general hospital knowledge. A recognition ceremony was also organized for the SKMC nurses who have achieved levels of advanced nursing practice and expertise on the SKMC Professional Nurse Clinical Ladder. There were 98 nurses in total who have achieved advanced practice levels.

Commenting on the International Nurses Day, Mrs. Tarey Ray, Chief Nursing Officer at SKMC said, "SKMC is constantly evolving its nursing practices to assure a high-level standard of quality and safe patient care, and customer service. Nurses partner with physicians and are advocates for our patients. Nurses advance the profession and their own career through participating in Link Nurse Activities, Shared Governance, continuing education, social and patient advocacy, implementing evidence based practices, and serving as mentors to each other and to new nurses to the profession. We are pleased to celebrate International Nurses Day with our nurses! We are very proud of our nurses at SKMC."

"We continue our journey toward Magnet recognition, and our efforts to provide excellent patient care and experience. Magnet status, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) through their Magnet Recognition Program®, is the highest national recognition awarded to a hospital or medical center for excellence in nursing in the USA. It is accepted nationally as the gold standard of patient care," Mrs. Ray further explained.

Mrs. Linda Haskins, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at SKMC stated, "SKMC employs approximately 1583 licensed professional nurses in all facilities. It is time to reflect on the dedication, caring, and compassion that each nurse demonstrates each day. Bedside patient care and excellent outcomes are our primary goals, and the reason we entered the nursing profession in the first place. We want to thank all of our nurses for doing such a great job every day."
