JEDDAH -- Many shops have ceased the trade of cosmetics after the Ministry of Labor's recent decision to only employ women at perfume and cosmetics shops in order to retain their expatriate staff.
"Commercial stores were feminized faster than had been expected, and women are gaining confidence as more opportunities become available to them," said Reem Asaad, member of the Saudi Economic Association. Benefits for Saudi women who work in the shops include a minimum monthly salary of SR3,000 50 percent of which is subsidized by The Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) for three years - registration in a social insurance group, annual leave of no less than 21 days, and eligibility for end of service benefits. Establishments found in violation of the directives are subject to fines or closure.
