MUSCAT -- The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department of the College of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) yesterday signed an agreement with Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) towards establishing a sustainable collaboration between the two parties for a three-year period.
The agreement was signed by Prof Ibrahim A Metwally, Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Ali bin Said al Hadabi, General Manager of OETC.
As per the agreement, OETC will extend its support for improving the practical experience of the ECE students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate (MSc and PhD) in the department by providing internship and other hands on training opportunities. The company will also support student projects through which, consultancy and research will be carried out for the benefit of the company.
The ECE will offer workshops and seminars to OETC employees as per specific requirements of the company. In addition, OETC will provide the ECE Department with a grant of RO 60,000. This grant will be utilised for supporting students' projects, upgrading existing power systems and energy labs at the ECE Department and organising workshops, seminars and students' activities.
Prof Metwally said that during the three-year period, experts in the ECE Department will offer solutions to the challenges faced by the company in power transmission sector. "The students' projects, workshops and training programmes will meet the requirements of the company. We have requested OETC to identify research areas which fit into its business needs and activities. The training opportunities for our students in the company will enhance the students' practical knowledge will make them ready to be employed by electricity sector companies. In return, SQU will offer focussed training programmes during the coming three years."
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr Abdullah al Badi, Dean of Admissions and Registration at SQU, Dr Mohammed al Badi, who will be the focal person for the tie-up between the two parties, and a number of senior officials from OETC.
