Qatar Steel marks 30th anniversary with plans for major expansion

DOHA - Qatar Steel , the first integrated steel manufacturer in the Gulf region, yesterday celebrated its 30th anniversary with major plans for expansion designed to produce technically-advanced products and increase the company's presence and visibility in the market.

To meet the spiralling demand of the GCC, regional and international markets, Qatar Steel is enhancing its production facilities, improving customer service and its chain of distributors.

The company affirmed its plan to increase the production capacity of all its mills in Mesaieed to 1.5m. It will build a new mill with a production capacity of 300,000 tons per annum of re-bars or reinforcement bars, a steel rod with ridges for use in reinforced concrete, in Jebel Ali Free Zone in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Qatar Steel expects the facility to be finished by January next year. Its subsidiary in Jebel Ali currently produces 240,000 tons of wire rods.

Qatar Steel has 25 percent stakes each in the Gulf Industrial Investment Company ( GIIC ) in Bahrain and the United Steel Company, which specialises in the manufacture of stainless steel.

" Qatar Steel is making big strides in steel production in an effort to meet the growing demand for re-bar and wire rod in the local market," Ali bin Hassan Al Muraikhi, Qatar Steel commercial manager, said at a news conference yesterday.

Al Muraikhi said the company stopped exporting to neighboring countries since August to make available the necessary quantity of steel required in the country.

" Qatar Steel has been providing and securing essential products for the development of Qatar and its neighbouring countries," said Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar Steel general manager and director.

"The current industrial, commercial and construction boom paves the way for a bright and prosperous future for Qatar," said Sheikh Hamad Al Thani.

The Qatar Steel general manager and director said the company's success was achieved due to its endeavors to achieve the best performance.

Al Muraikhi said the company is proud of its 30 years of unrivaled reputation earned through a reliable delivery chain of its products which range from re-bars and wire rods to billets.
