DOHA: Public Works Authority (Ashghal) announced that all paving works on North Road Project has been completed and the road is fully open for traffic.

However, works on central divider, beautification and 6km distance from Al Shamal Sports Club roundabout toward Doha will continue, while intersection No. 16 at Umm Salal will be ready by the end of the year, a local daily reported.

The project is one of the most important road projects launched by Ashghal. The second and third phase developments of the North Road Project worth QR2.181bn was taken up by construction giant Tekfen of Turkey.

The project comprises 95km as a dual carriage-way with a four-lane road (a total of eight lanes) with major interchanges and a large central divider.

It has 66km of service roads, 20 main intersections with flyovers and facility for gas pipelines.

There are also five camel crossing points apart from 95km of irrigation water line and 60km line for drinking water.

In addition, the project has 120km of infrastructure services for the smart traffic control, 350km cables for lighting, 126km of Qtel cable along with speed control (humps), three weighbridges and around 300km of road barrier.

The first phase of work on the Al Shamal Road included the Umm Lakhba Interchange while the second and third phases of the project focused on building a four-lane dual carriageway throughout the road with 20 multi-level interchanges, truck weighbridges, upgraded infrastructure networking and street beautification works.

According to earlier reports, the road will extend up to 35km from Al Zubara interchange to Ras Ishairij area eventually connecting Doha with the planned Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Bridge.

The fourth phase of the Al Shamal road passes through a number of small towns such as Ghuwairiya, West Salimi and ending at Zubara castle. It consists of a two-way road with four lanes in each direction and a number of intersections.
