Qatar Entertainment City (QEC) announced a QR100 million (Dh101m) tender award to HBK Contracting (Hamad bin Khalid Companies) to complete QEC's Phase II of infrastructure work within 18 months.

Phase II work includes the construction of roads, sewerage network, water systems and main irrigation system including a connecting network for fire fighting. HBK will also be installing the electrical works such as road lighting as well as the construction of six bridges over the water canal and implementing a traffic system.

Yousef Darwish, General Manager of QEC, said: "We are pleased to award the infrastructural work to a reputed national company. The completion of work on schedule is one of our top priorities, as conclusion of other phases is dependent on this particular activity."

Sheikh Ali bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairman of HBK, said: "We are delighted to get this assignment and at our involvement in creating something that will help position Qatar as a tourist destination within the region. The project's components are distinct and much needed in our country. One of the main factors of success is outstanding infrastructure work - which is what we plan on delivering on time."

QEC is an Abu Dhabi Investment House concept of a mixed-use development containing components of retail, residential and hospitality with a focus on entertainment. QEC, a one million square metres waterfront project, is being developed in the Lusail Development, north of Doha.

QEC has recently completed Phase I of the infrastructure where the 1.5km water canal dividing the northern district of the city from its southern district has been finished. QEC's India Entertainment City is also in the process of being implemented in Navi Mumbai, India.

The past year was an active one for QEC. The announcements included a joint venture with Majed Al Futtaim Group to develop QEC Downtown; partnership with United Development Company of Kuwait to develop the southern district of QEC; and an agreement with the international Six Flags to establish Six Flags in QEC as a major entertainment theme park.
