DOHA: The representative body of the private sector said yesterday it has no plans to urge member-companies to raise the salaries of its employees due to galloping inflation.

"We have no desire to ask companies to review the salaries of their employees. Let companies review the payments of their staff members on their own," said a senior office-bearer of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) asking not to be identified.

When told that the government had announced huge salary raise for its Qatari employees, the official said the QCCI can at beast urge businesses not to raise prices.

Salaries in the private sector are regulated by contracts signed between employers and employees, he said. "So it is up to a company to evaluate the performance of its employees and consider giving them a raise." "We will not interfere in the matter of salaries in the private sector," the official who is a key member of the QCCI board reiterated in remarks to this newspaper.

The official replied in the negative when asked if the QCCI was conducting or planned to conduct a study on rising prices, their causes and impact on the common man. "There is no such study being conducted and we have no plans to carry out any such study," the official said.
