Over 150,000 Syrians in Jordan -- Judeh

By Taylor Luck MAFRAQ -- The number of Syrians who have fled to Jordan has passed the 150,000 mark, an official said on Monday, renewing calls on the international community to help the government cope with an emerging humanitarian crisis.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said over 150,000 Syrians had entered the Kingdom since May 2011.

"We hope that they can return to their homeland soon," Judeh said on the sidelines of an official visit by several foreign ambassadors to the Zaatari Refugee Camp on Monday.

Also during the visit, HRH Prince Rashid, chairman of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation, which administers the camp, urged the international community to step up its assistance in order to improve camp conditions, which officials describe as "undesirable".

Local officials called for greater coordination in order to continue providing assistance to displaced Syrians, who are arriving at a rate of some 1,500 persons per day.

A dramatic spike in new arrivals triggered by intensified fighting across Syria prompted Amman to open the country's first Syrian refugee camp, a collection of some 2,000 tents in the desert outskirts of the northeastern border city of Mafraq designed to host up to 115,000 people.

Under a decision issued last month, the government gave the UN the green light to establish up to 22 camps in the border region in anticipation of the potential influx of up to one million Syrians.

Despite the added burden the growing refugee community is placing on Jordan's already-stressed resources, Amman has vowed to maintain its open-border policy, granting refuge to all Syrians entering the country.
