36 PAEW water projects under execution
By Hasan Kamoonpuri MUSCAT -- Anticipating a constant increase in the demand for water, the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) is currently executing 36 water projects worth many millions of rials. The authority has earmarked around RO 700 million for these projects for the current Eighth Five Year Plan (2011-2015).Some of these projects currently under various stages of execution in the Muscat region include expansion of Al Qurum reservoir and related works; expansion of Bausher Reservoir; Water supply to Qurayat, Chlorination unit at al Khoudh Reservoir; Expansion of Mawaleh Reservoir; relocation of 0.5 migd desalination plant from Sur to Qurayat; Expansion of Wadi Kabir Reservoir; Construction of Main Store at Maabella; Scada and leakage Control system for Water Transmission network in Muscat; and Central Control Building at Bausher.
Similarly, seven projects are under way at various places in Al Wusta region; six in Al Sharqiyah; two in Musandam; five in Al Dakhiliyah; four in Al Batinah and one each in Buraimi and Dhahirah governorates. In total, as many as 36 projects under various stages of execution in the country, according to Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi, who is Chairman of PAEW since its establishment.
They include new supply networks as well refurbishing of existing networks and setting up a number of desalination plants. A number of wilayats will get additional water tanks under the project, which includes the Qalhat water supply network, new networks in the wilayats of Al Qabail, Ibra and the niyabats of Sinaw and Ras al Hadd, and the Masirah Island.
