Three domestically-made trains and 12 passenger cars will be launched today in a ceremony to be attended by Roads and Urban Development Minister Ali Nikzad.

According to the report released by IRNA, optimization of domestic capabilities is among the programs drawn up by the ministry, IRNA reported.

The report said development and renovation of the country's rail transport fleet and increasing its capacity have been placed on the ministry's agenda.

In September 2012, Ahmad Sadeqi, deputy roads and urban development minister, said about 1.3 billion rials have been spent for preparing the substructure and laying the tracks.

The official noted that the railroad will be connected to Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf littoral states through the South Railroad and North-South Corridor.

"This will create a profitable transit network," he said.

Sadeqi explained that the country's entire railroad network stands at 11,000 km, adding that another 11,000 km are also under construction.
