Abu Dhabi - Abu Dhabi Dr Maha Tayseer Barakat will now head the emirate of Abu Dhabi’s health regulatory body, the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD), as its director general.
The decree was issued today (Thursday) by General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Dr Maha is currently the medical and research director at the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) in Abu Dhabi, which offers diabetes diagnosis, treatment and management services. The ICLDC also conducts regular research on diabetes and patient care in the UAE. At ICLDC Abu Dhabi, Dr Maha has worked to achieve world-class excellence in clinical service, while also promoting public health, teaching and research.
The new director general has also previously served as a prime board member at the HAAD. She has also been a medical and research director at the Imperial College London in the UK.
She graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1993 as the first MB/PhD candidate in the UK to be funded by a Wellcome Prize Studentship, which is granted by global charitable foundation Wellcome Trust. At the university, she specialised in diabetes, endocrinology and general internal medicine.
Dr Maha gained her Membership of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 1997, and was awarded the Certificate of Specialist Training in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine in 2003.
Dr Maha has also been an honorary member of the consultant team at the Hammersmith Hospital in West London, and was responsible for the running and the organisation of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department. with inputs from wam
