Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research (BCSR) is organising an economic conference on 'Market Liberalisation, Privatisation and Economic Regulation in the GCC Countries: Challenges and Prospects', which will be held on 19 and 20 November 2008.

The conference will focus mainly on the international trends with regard to market liberalisation and privatisation, their impact on the GCC countries, and the role of financial markets in consolidating the liberalisation and privatisation of the Gulf markets.

In addition the conference will also cover the experience of liberalising and regulating the telecommunications sector in the Gulf region.

Two roundtable discussions will take place during the conference. One will focus on Regulation and Reform of the Gulf Labour Market, and another on Future Developments with regard to Market Liberalization in the GCC Countries.

Dr Mohammed J K Alghatam, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of BCSR, said that this conference would shed light on very important economic issues, especially privatisation, which is considered to be a key economic instrument for the opening up of the economy and the liberalisation of the market.

Dr Alghatam added that Bahrain has achieved successful liberalisation in several sectors, including the telecommunications sector, which was opened up following the establishment of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

One of the main tasks of the TRA is to encourage competition in the provision of services among the various telecommunications companies in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
