Muscat: With the continued growth in the population of the entire Middle East region, there is greater need for affordable housing, making it imperative for both the public and private sectors to work closely to be able to meet the future demands, said C. J. Paul, chief executive officer of Global Exhibitions & Conferences LLC (GEC), the leading organiser of industry-specific trade shows and conferences in the Sultanate.
Paul was speaking at the first-ever 'Affordable Housing Development Summit Oman', currently under way at the Grand Hyatt Muscat, and will conclude tomorrow.
Over 80 local and international delegates and up to 20 high-profile speakers comprising ministry officials and industry experts are taking part in the event.
The executive-level event was formally inaugurated yesterday by Salih bin Mohammed Al Farsi, undersecretary at the Ministry
of Housing.
The dignitaries present were senior government officials, diplomats, top managers of major companies, industry experts, and industry professionals.
Organised jointly by GEC and IQPC Middle East, the Affordable Housing Development Summit Oman is being held under the patronage of the Ministry of Housing, and is endorsed by the Supreme Committee of Town Planning.
The event is also sponsored by Larsen & Toubro Oman LLC, Horizons Building Systems, and Gulf Prefab Houses Factory LLC.
The four-day event began on Sunday, with a pre-summit workshop focusing on the development of a legal and regulatory framework for affordable housing development.
The main summit delves on a wide range of topics, including the concept of affordable housing in the Middle East, the delivery of self-sustainable affordable housing communities, and the importance of maximising durability in low-cost housing projects.
The event will conclude on June 22 with another workshop that would discuss master planning and design approaches for affordable housing developments.
"The Affordable Housing Development Summit Oman comes a time when various government programmes and private sector projects are currently being implemented to effectively address the growing demand for low-cost housing, making the event valuable in discussing best practices and in charting the way forward," said Shameema Parveen, Conference Producer at IQPC Middle East.
The summit plans to pave the way for a meaningful discussion of all issues related to affordable housing.
The event organisers have brought together a strong lineup of experienced speakers made up of government officials and industry experts from various countries, including Algeria, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UK, US and the United Arab Emirates.
