Resort team joined divers and volunteers from all over UAE to bring trash amounting to over a ton from on shore and underwater
Fujairah, United Arab Emirates; Clean-Up Arabia 2010 provided yet another opportunity for a team of Le Méridien Al Aqah to participate in the yearly campaign along with Emirates Diving Association (EDA) on November 6, 2010. The key objective of the initiative was to help clean beaches and important dive sites within the Dibba Municipality. Simultaneously, it also promoted public awareness about the environmental effects of marine debris on personal health and underwater wildlife.
Held under the patronage of Sheikh His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Clean-Up Arabia project is part of a week long programme that will see similar activities across the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar. All participants made their contribution to a common goal that involves preserving, conserving and enhancing the marine ecosystem for future generations.
Patrick Antaki, General Manager, Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, said, "Environmental conservation is the key to our corporate social responsibility agenda and our long standing association with EDA has further strengthened and motivated us to support and introduce various eco friendly initiatives. Le Meridien Al Aqah team stay committed towards public awareness campaigns that make a significant impact on spreading the powerful message of environmental protection. We are delighted with the support we receive from the authorities, community and media during Clean up Arabia, the artificial reef ball project, earth day, earth hour and various recycling projects which are on going regularly."
This year, a total of over 350 participants volunteered to gather marine debris that has serious negative impact. Besides members of Le Méridien Al Aqah and Emirates Diving Association, several other organizations made an overwhelming contribution to ensuring the success of Clean-Up Arabia 2010 in Fujairah.
The enthusiastic participation of local public schools was joined by Al Bidya and Dibba Fishermen's associations, Dibba Association for Culture and Art; Fujairah Police, Coast guard, Al Boom Diving, Dibba Municipality, Coca Cola, Dubai Chamber and Dubai Duty Free.
Volunteers worked in groups to cover local dive sites and beaches. After a grueling morning, the teams returned by mid-day with debris that was weighed to over a ton including metals, fishing nets, plastic and metal wastage. The afternoon saw ten teams participate in a volleyball tournament that had the spirited participation from two Le Méridien Al Aqah staff and guests and other teams that represented several partners that supported the Clean-Up Arabia initiative.
