JEDDAH - Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah Region, has ordered quick action to solve the problem of running underground water and sewage in some residential districts and streets in the city. Speaking at a meeting of senior officials at his office on Tuesday, Prince Khaled underscored the need for framing a time-bound plan to address this problem, and submit to him at the earliest possible. The meeting was also attended by Jeddah Governor Prince Mishal Bin Majed, Mayor Hani Abu Ras, and CEO of National Water Company (NWC) Dr. Luay Al-Musallam.
Prince Khaled stressed that priorities must be given to the affected districts while preparing the plan. He has also issued instructions to quickly start implementing the projects, first in the districts of Al-Haramain, Al-Jaweed and Harazat.
Prince Mishal said that a committee with representatives from the governorate, the mayoralty, and the NWC, has enumerated the districts affected by ground water. It has identified some districts that needed immediate solution. "The committee is working to facilitate the government procedures to ensure quick implementation of the projects after dividing them into three phases - urgent, starting after nine months, and starting after one year," he said adding that the time-bound plan for addressing the water overflow problem will be approved within two weeks.
Meanwhile, the mayoralty and NWC sources said measures to address the water overflow problem have been taken in the districts of Al-Haramain, AlJaweed and Harazat and that was in line with the directives of Prince Faisal.
Drainage works were also started in 18 districts and for which 10 new contracts have been signed. SR55 million was allocated for implementing two projects in Al-Haramain and Al-Jaweed.
