BAGHDAD, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- Iraq is set to reopen Abu Ghraib prison, the notorious site of executions and torture under Saddam Hussein and later on of a US prisoner abuse scandal, once underway renovation works are completed.
The jail will be renamed "Baghdad Central Prison".
The Iraqi Ministry of Justice is now rehabilitating the infamous jail in order to make it compatible with international requirements and criteria, the Iraqi Cabinet said in a release handed out here Thursday.
Iraqi Acting Minister of Justice Safaaldeen Al-Safi and several other government officials have visited the prison in order to inspect restoration works there, it said.
The prison, 30 kilometers to the west of Baghdad, has been shut down since US prisoner abuse scandals erupted in 2006.
