Japan remains top importer of Kuwaiti crude -- official

By Miyoko Ishigami (with photos) TOKYO, Oct 13 (KUNA) -- Japan remains the number-one importer of Kuwaiti crude oil, securing 20 percent of its imports of oil from the Gulf state, though the Japanese demand for the oil dropped over the past years, said a visiting Kuwaiti official on Thursday.

Kuwait exports to the Asian nation crude oil, gas and naphtha, said Farouk Hussain Al-Zanki, Deputy Chairman of the board of Directors, and Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation ( KPC ), in an interview with KUNA, on sidelines of his visit to the Japanese capital.

Japan has maintained the level of its crude imports from Kuwait; 200-300 barrels per day, he added.

Shedding some light on the history of Kuwaiti-Japanese cooperation at this level, Al-Zanki said the first shipment of Kuwaiti crude was sent to a Japanese refining company in 1958, before the two countries established relations in 1961. Since then, the KPC has established close ties with Japanese clients.

Al-Zanki had signed a long-term contract with the Japanese Oil Company, Fuji, for supplying it with crude oil. The deal is forecast to post billions of dollars in earnings for the Kuwaiti budget.
