Amman - The Jordanian French Uranium Mining Company JFUMC, which is prospecting for uranium ore in Central Jordan, said the Kingdom's confirmed resources of the mineral now exceed 20,000 tons.
It said in a statement that the figure was released to update previous information that some 12,300 tons of potential uranium reserves had been identified over an area of 18 square kilometers in central Jordan.
JFUMC, a joint venture of Jordan Energy Resources Inc. and French AREVA, said the increase was due to the addition of exploration in areas adjacent to the original drilling site.
The statement said that at this crucial phase of exploration, an economic feasibility study and other technical studies on uranium extraction will begin taking into account the current situation and forecasts on future demand.
It said the Jordan Nuclear Energy Commission and Areva will work closely to find best mining ways in future within the designated area, taking into consideration economic feasibility, including production costs and sales prices.
The statement stressed the importance of the discovered amount of uranium ore as a key strategic reserve of the Kingdom to secure nuclear fuel supplies to run nuclear energy stations that will be launched to reduce the Kingdom's energy bill.
