Supply and demand of iron and steel in the domestic market are balanced, said the head of Iron Dealers Association.

Mohammad Azad added that currently, steel products are supplied through the Commodity Exchange.

He put annual demand for iron products at 23 million to 24 million tons, adding that close to 8 million tons are secured through the import of steel beams and ingots.

Azad expressed hope that with the implementation of new units, domestic output will rise.

Earlier this year, World Steel Association (WSA) announced that Iran is the largest steel producer in the Middle East and North Africa.

According to WSA's report, Iran produced 14.46 million tons of crude steel in 2012 and was named the first largest producer of crude steel in the Middle East and North Africa.

The country's main steel mills are located in Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces.

Iran has raised its steel production output by more than 9 percent, the WSA announced in January, adding that the country is now the world's 15th steel producer.

Among 62 major steel producers, Iran jumped two steps higher and became the world's 15th steel producer in 2012, the report said.

Iran ranked above Britain, Spain and Canada.
