Khuzestan province meets 45 percent of Iran's total sugar demand, said managing director of Sugarcane and Byproducts Development Company.
Nasim Sadeqi said that given the suitable climatic conditions of the country in the current farming year, 500,000 tons of sugar are expected to be produced from 4.8 million tons of sugarcane cultivated by the company, IRNA reported.
"Karoun and Haft-Tappeh Company of Khuzestan province have the capacity to produce 150,000 tons of sugar," he said, adding that the figure will comprise 50 percent of the country's total sugar production.
Sadeqi noted that 1.3 million tons of sugar are projected to be produced in the country next year.
She pointed out that 66,000 hectares are under sugarcane cultivation across the country and the figure is expected to hit 84,000 hectares by the end of the current Iranian year. Sadeqi pointed out that 380,000 tons of raw sugar were produced from 3.8 million tons of sugarcane cultivated by the company last year.
