Iran Starts Work On First Salt Cavern Gas Storage Facility

Masoud Samivand, Managing Director of the Natural Gas Storage Company (NGSC), a subsidiary of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), told Shana on 5 May that the company has started to plan for the construction of Iran’s first salt dome gas storage facility. This will be located near the central city of Kashan. Mr Samivand said that initial studies have indicated that the facility will have capacity to hold 3-4.5bn cu ms of gas. He said drilling into the Nasrabad salt structure will begin in May. Mr Samivand also said that the target of the ongoing five-year plan is to increase the country’s gas storage capacity to 14 bcm by March 2015, with the ability to deliver 130mn cmd of gas when required.

Mr Samivand said that Iran was also constructing phase two of the Sharajeh gas storage facility. The depleted Sharajeh gas field was converted for use as Iran’s first strategic gas storage facility and filling began a year ago (MEES, 23 May 2011). NGSC plans to reach its initial storage target of 1.5 bcm at Sharajeh by the end of March 2013, with capacity to withdraw up to 10mn cmd during the winter peak demand season. Sharajeh Phase 2 is intended to increase storage capacity to 4.5 bcm and gas withdrawal capacity to 30mn cmd. It is expected to cost $200mn and to be completed by the end of March 2015.
