The Iranian Net Optic Fiber Operator should provide services to 400,000 and 1 million subscribers by August and within the next two years respectively, said the managing director of the operator.

Mohammad Ali Rahmandoost added that the operator should also attract 8 million subscribers within eight years, Fars News Agency reported.

He announced that on Wednesday, a memorandum of understanding on launching the pilot plan of optic fiber network in Aras Free Zone, East Azarbaijan province, was signed between Iranian Net Optic Fiber Operator and Aras Free Trade Zone Organization.

Rahmandoost noted that the operator seeks to launch optic fiber networks in seven cities, namely Mashhad (Khorasan Razavi province), Tehran, Shiraz (Fars province), Karaj (Alborz province), Qom, Isfahan and Tabriz (East Azarbaijan province).

"The operator is also allowed to provide optic fiber services to other places," he said.

Optic fiber can be used as a medium for telecommunications and networking because it is flexible and can be bundled as cables.

Iran currently has optical fiber connectivity with neighboring states.

An optical fiber is a glass or plastic fiber designed to guide light along its length by confining as much light as possible in a propagating form. In fibers with large core diameter, the confinement is based on total internal reflection.

Optical fiber can be used as a medium for telecommunications and networking because it is flexible and can be bundled as cables. It is advantageous for long-distance communications, because light propagates through the fiber with little attenuation compared to electrical cables.
