The first drilling rig of the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) was installed in Phase 14 of South Pars gas field development project, said deputy managing director of the NIDC for drilling operations.

Mohammad Reza Takaydi said by setting up the rig for the first time in South Pars, it will be possible to drill an oil well to a depth of more than 3,500 meters in the sea before installing the jacket, IRNA reported.

Another drilling rig is slated to be installed in the same position by next month, Takaydi added.

Once the drilling operations of the first well is completed, by installing 2 jackets, drilling operations for 20 development oil wells and one appraisal oil well will begin.

Phase 14 of South Pars development project costing $5.249 billion has been undertaken by a consortium of 8 domestic contractors in Pars 2 region (Kangan).

On completion, the phase is expected to produce 50 million cubic meters of sweet gas, 75,000 barrels of gas condensates and 400 tons of sulfur per day.

It will also produce more than 1 million tons of liquefied gas and 1 million tons of ethane as feedstock for petrochemical units.
