Head of Recycling Organization of Shiraz Municipality said that a project to build the first biomass power plant will begin today in Shiraz, southern Fars province.

According to Moj news agency, Ramezan Amini stated Wednesday that the project would be completed within six months given that all machineries and equipment are imported from China.

He recalled that a pilot plan to dump waste in a landfill for producing biogas began in Shiraz in 1999.

The plan was approved by Iran New Energy Organization in 2001.

The official said that following the approval of the organization, a contract was signed with an Iranian investor and Chinese company to construct the power plant.

Putting the annual capacity of the plant at 1,065 kilowatt/hour, Amini added that under an agreement with the organization and Iran's Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution Company (Tavanir), its electricity would be sold 550 rials per kilowatt/hour.

The environmentally-friendly power plant is planned to be in operation for 13 years, he said.

Majority of cities have received approval from the organization to launch power plants using biomass for electricity generation.

Global energy demand has increased by 3.3 percent in the past three decades. The growing need has made countries step up efforts to find new and renewable energy sources. Iran is also keen on producing energy from non-fossil fuel. In line with this, Energy Ministry established the organization in February 2000. One of the organization's objectives is to develop power plants operating on renewable energy sources such as wind or biomass. The organization has signed contracts to purchase electricity generated by private wind farms and biomass sites.
