Close to 83 percent of population have access to gas, said the deputy oil minister.
Javad Oji, who is also managing director of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), added that 15,300 cities and villages have been linked to the national gas network, Mehr News Agency reported.
He said gas supply has accelerated during the fourth (2005-10) and fifth (2010-15) plans.
Before the start of Fourth Plan, only 600 cities were linked to the national gas network, but 400 new cities received access since the start of Fourth Plan.
Oji noted that over 12,220 villages have also been linked to the network in the past eight years.
"At present, 1,000 cities and 14,300 villages have access to gas," he said.
The deputy minister said increasing gas refining capacity and expanding gas transmission network are major programs of the current Iranian year (started March 21).
"Iran's share in the global gas trade will rise this year with the launch of new export projects," he predicted.
Oji said between four and five villages on average have been connected to the national gas network daily since the start of the current Iranian year.
