Abu Dhabi: Nearly 80 per cent of schools in Abu Dhabi emirate that participated in a healthy living campaign now include a physical activity policy, the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) has announced.

In addition, 60 per cent of the 53 schools participating in the Eat Right Get Active campaign offer at least three physical exercise classes of 40 minutes per week, a statement from HAAD said.

The details were revealed at a ceremony honouring the public and private schools that undertook the campaign, which is conducted by the HAAD, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), the Ambulatory Healthcare Services and the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority.

Healthy eating options are available at 71.4 per cent of school premises, including canteens and vending machines.

In addition, 78.6 per cent of the schools also have nutrition policies, and all of them implement the school canteen guidelines.

“Research shows that healthy students tend to have higher academic achievements and cognitive thinking. That is why it is vital to maintain and continue to promote healthy lifestyle habits among our youth who are the future of this country,” said Mohammad Salem Al Daheri, executive director of school operations at the Adec.

Officials also said that, for the first time this year, children and parents participated in week-long activities that promoted the awareness of physical activity and healthy eating.

“We are delighted with the high standard of work that we have seen from the participating institutions, and look forward to witnessing the participation of more schools in the programme,” said Dr Omniyat Al Hajiri, director of public health and policy at the HAAD.
