Dubai: A group of young people with hearing disabilities has prepared a set of recommendations - to be submitted to the concerned authorities - on new rules and practices that would help facilitate their integration into society.

The group includes officials from different organisations that deal with people with disabilities in the country, namely Zayed Hi care, the Sharjah Association for Humanitarian Services and five other centres under the supervision of the ministry of social affairs.

The eight recommendations highlighted include a unified sign language for the deaf, providing sworn interpreters to authorities such as police, courts and hospitals, ensuring the right for university education, among others.

The paper was released yesterday at the Ministry of Social Affairs' forum for the deaf as part of event to celebrate the International Deaf week, which is marked every year between April 20 to 27 to raise awareness on issues dealing with hearing challenges.

The theme for this year is "Towards Human Security for the Deaf" and the key objective is to provide recommendations and a framework to facilitate the relationship between government, non-government entities and the deaf community.

The recommendations, which were prepared in cooperation with Watani - the social development programme - shed light on the day-to-day challenges faced by people with hearing disabilities, such as difficulty in dealing with police in case of accidents, difficulty in finding sworn interpreters with sign language skills and also challenges in finding employment due to discrimination.

Mohammad Baharoon, Deputy Director of Watani, said the programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs will help facilitate meetings between the members of the deaf community who prepared the paper and the various entities involved in the recommendations.

"This will establish a dialogue so that we can discuss the best ways to implement their recommendations," he said.

Is enough being done to help these children? Should they be given a more holistic experience?
