Credentials of expat medical professionals vital for quality

Dubai Though it takes time to check credentials of expatriate medical professionals back in their home countries, it is necessary as Dubai wants to provide the best health care services, senior doctors said.

Hundreds of doctors, nurses and various medical technicians are hired in Dubai and checking whether their degrees and certificates are genuine takes time and presents some challenges, said the doctors.

“The delay is not from our side,” said Dr Ramadan Ebrahim, director of health regulation department at the Dubai Health Authority ( DHA ). He said the checks called the primary source verification takes about six weeks, but that is because the universities back in the professionals home countries take time to verify and reply.

He denied the checks are being done because of a spate of fake degrees, but that it is part of international best practises. But earlier last year a plastic surgeon who claimed he had graduated from the US, was prosecuted after he bungled up a procedure.

Dr Pietie Lousber, chief clinical officer with EHL management services said he was in full support of the DHA’s rigorous licensing checks as it was necessary to get quality staff who are skilled to work in Dubai.

But he said the time it takes presents challenges in the recruitment of staff. “I understand the delay is not the fault of the authorities.”

He called for synchronising the different licensing requirments that the DHA and the free zone, the Dubai HealthCare City (DHCC) require. The officer said the procedures are also different between the Abu Dhabi and Dubai emirates. “It is confusing.”

Mathew T.S., assistant human resources manager at DM Healthcare Group, said the verification of degrees does not stop the hiring process in Dubai. “The doctors and professionals hired after their exams are allowed to work while the verification is going on,” he said.

Global guidelines

The Group last week hired 100 health care staff from the Philippines and next week will be hiring more staff from the sub-continent from its expansion projects. But the manager said the process is different in Abu Dhabi where the professional staff has to wait till the verification process is done.

Dr Ebrahim said similar checks in all countries. “These are the international guidelines which we have been given,’ he said.
