Sharjah: Sharjah International airport received Jet Airways' inaugural flight 9W-562 on Tuesday from Kochi with 134 passengers on board.

Dr Ganem Al Hajiri, director-general of the Sharjah Airport Authority, said: "A carrier of such prestige and repute as Jet provides a new dimension and alternative to the subcontinent bound traveller."

He emphasised the importance of Sharjah as an industrial and tourism destination in the region, saying this service would further enhance the strong relations between the two countries.

Shaker Kantawala, general manager of Jet Airways, said, "Establishing this line will fulfil the wishes of many residents in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates as well as from Kerala, who are familiar with the Jet Airways brand."

Kantawala pointed out that as a start-up incentive, the company is offering special promotions.

Jet Airways flies to many destinations in the Gulf including Kuwait, Bahrain, Muscat, Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah and Riyadh from various Indian cities.

Flight 9W562 will depart Kochi daily at 10.45am and arrive at Sharjah at 1.05pm, while flight 9W561 will depart from Sharjah at 2.15pm and arrive in Kochi at 7.45pm.
