Manama, Bahrain: Key issues surrounding the current global energy climate will fall under the spotlight at the conference opening session of the 9th Middle East Geosciences Conference and Exhibition - GEO 2010 - on 7 March at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

An audience of over 2,000 oil and gas professionals will converge to hear a panel of senior industry figures deliver their own perspective on this year's conference theme 'Innovative Geoscience Solutions - Meeting Hydrocarbon Demand in Changing Times.'

Addressing the need for an inventive approach to new technology and partnerships between industry, governments and communities to leverage opportunities in today's high-stakes environment created by recent changes in financial markets, the conference session will begin with welcome speeches by Bahrain's Minister of Oil & Gas Affairs and Chairman of the National Oil & Gas Authority His Excellency Dr. Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza and the GEO 2010 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bapco Faisal Al Mahroos.

Major issues will also be debated in a series of 5 high-level panel sessions throughout the conference, including the human resources crisis the industry currently faces, leadership and decision-making, research and development, unconventional energy resources and new opportunities in mature oil and gas fields.

The packed conference schedule also incorporates 5 pre-event technical short courses and 4 pre-event field trips to sites of geological interest in Bahrain and Oman, designed to offer participants further opportunities to learn and integrate.

GEO 2010 Exhibition

The associated exhibition of exploration products and services will be inaugurated in a separate ceremony under the patronage of His Royal Highness the Prime Minister of Bahrain Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa on Monday 8 March 2010 at the exhibition centre.

A total of 164 exhibitors from 27 countries will be in attendance at GEO 2010 occupying a total floor area of 14,000 square metres.

Amongst them is high profile participation from the prolific reserve areas of the Gulf. All six Gulf Cooperation Council national oil companies: Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco), Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) and Qatar Petroleum (QP) are taking flagship stands.

International oil companies also maintain a strong presence at GEO 2010 with BGP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals Corporation (JOGMEC), Occidental, Shell and Total occupying significant exhibition space.

Service industry giants Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Schlumberger and WesternGeco amongst others consolidate this line up in addition to dedicated UK and North America pavilions.

"No other geosciences event brings together all of the essential players focused on the future development of the Middle East's hydrocarbon resources. Sharing ideas and exchanging information with peers from national and international oil companies, professional societies, universities and services providers makes GEO 2010 a unique opportunity for industry professionals to find and apply new knowledge that can truly make a difference," Arabian Exhibition Management's Director of Sales and Marketing Fawzi Al Shehabi said.

The GEO series is organised by Arabian Exhibition Management of Bahrain in association with London based Overseas Exhibition Services, both members of Allworld Exhibitions.

The GEO 2010 conference is supported and developed by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), the Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS), the Bahrain Geoscience Society (BGS), the Geological Society of Oman (GSO), Qatar Geological Society (QGS) and the Emirates Society of Geoscientists (ESG) in cooperation with a committee of national and international oil company representatives.

MEPEX 2010 Exhibition

Recognising the importance of the GEO series and its position as the leading petroleum geosciences event in the Middle East, GEO 2010 has been selected as the launch venue for a new exhibition entitled the Middle East Prospect Exhibition (MEPEX 2010).

MEPEX 2010 will run in tandem with GEO 2010 at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre from 8 to 10 March under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza. The exhibition is developed by a committee steered by Bapco.

MEPEX 2010 follows similar events held internationally and aims to establish itself as a regional marketplace for the buying, selling and trading of oil and gas prospects and producing properties.

Participants include Cairn India, Dana Gas, Kuwait Energy Company, the Moroccan National Oil & Mining Company, the Republic of Cyprus' Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Tourism and Sudapet amongst others.

"Our vision is to complement GEO by creating a Middle Eastern oil and gas marketplace. By bringing together prospects, properties, capital and industry services all in one location, we aspire to establish MEPEX as the region's prime E&P business event," MEPEX 2010 chairman Faisal Al Mahroos said.
