Fishery exports to hit 750,000 tons
About 750,000 tons of aquatic products will be exported in the current Iranian year (started March 20), said agricultural jihad minister.Sadeq Khalilian said that some one trillion rials ($100 million) in credit have been made available to indebted shrimp farmers, IRNA reported on Tuesday.
He added that shrimp culture is expected to increase by 100 percent this year, pointing out that about 4,000 tons of shrimps were exported in the past year.
Referring to the plan of the ministry to develop aquaculture industry, he said efforts are underway to implement the plan in a large number of fish farms.
Khalilian added that low interest loans are expected to be allocated to those involved in the industry.
The minister said implementing cage fishing projects and reviving shrimp culture farms are among the other priorities of the ministry for the current year, adding that Iran has the potential to process more than 4 million tons of agricultural products annually, and that creating new capacity in the industry will help the country avoid the export of raw materials.
Managing director of Iran's Development Fund for Export of Aquatics Arsalan Qassemi said earlier Iran has the potential to raise the value of fishery export to 3 million tons.
Even the countries which pursue sanctions against Iran, are keen to purchase Iranian aquatic products, he asserted.
The official said that based on the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2010-15), production in the fisheries sector is to reach one million tons per year.
