Abu Dhabi: A new paid-parking regimen that extends daily public parking fees until midnight came into effect in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

The new fees that extend payment for two hours beyond the former 10pm limit are being enforced by Abu Dhabi parking officials.

The main push behind the newly extended parking fee hours is to help free up parking spaces for a larger number of users, officials told Gulf News recently.

“Extending the paid parking hours until midnight will result in a more efficient utilisation of parking space, so it can be beneficial to a bigger number of users,” said Mohammad Nasser Al Otaiba, general manager of Mawaqif at the Department of Transport.

Some residents told Gulf News that freeing up parking spaces will give residents the opportunity to find free spaces later in the day given that parking spaces that were formerly taken all evening are now open.
