Iran is expected to increase Euro 4 gasoline production by 60 percent, said a member of the Majlis Energy Commission.

"Currently, Euro 2 gasoline and diesel are supplied to domestic consumers, the sulfur amount of which is 13,000-15,000 parts per million (ppm)," Abbas Soltani added.

He put the amount of sulfur in Euro 4 fuel at less than 10 ppm, which is far less polluting than Euro 2 fuels.

Soltani said increasing investment in joint oil and gas fields is a positive aspect of the current year's budget. During the previous years, unlike Iran, neighboring countries, including Iraq, Qatar and UAE, have extracted significant amounts of oil and gas from the joint fields.

"However, in the current year, investment in the joint fields is prioritized," he said.

"It is among the best strategies to do away with the West's unilateral sanctions."

Soltani noted that in the current year's budget, crude oil export has decreased, which boosts investments in the oil by-products sector.

"Iran should do its best in the current year to raise oil and gas extraction from the joint fields," he said.

The official said that in order to develop the oil industry, officials should prepare the ground for competition between domestic and foreign producers.

"This way we can facilitate the successful presence of our country in international markets," he concluded.

Iran holds the world's second-largest natural gas reserves. It shares oil and gas fields with most of its neighbors, including Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.

Earlier, Moslem Rahimi, the managing director of Abadan Oil Refining Company, said by launching Abadan Refinery's Phase 3, emission standards of the refinery's gasoline production will be upgraded from Euro 4 to Euro 5.

"Currently, the units of Abadan Refinery's Phase 3 can only produce Euro 4 gasoline. However, by launching the complementary units, the refinery will produce 6 million liters of gasoline per day," he said.

Rahimi noted that the units will come on stream in the first half of the current Iranian year (started March 20, 2013).
