Bank Negara Malaysia is pleased to accord "Emas" status for the issuance of the Sime Darby Berhad USD800 million sukuk. The "Emas" was conferred today at the Business Talk on Ethical Investing, hosted by Bank Negara Malaysia today, in conjunction with the 10th Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) Summit. This is the 11th conferment to a sukuk issuer since the introduction of "Emas" status in 2009. "Emas" is Malaysia's designation accorded to foreign currency denominated bonds and sukuk originating from Malaysia in the global capital market.
This inaugural Emas sukuk issuance by Sime Darby attracted substantial demand particularly from the Asian region. Asian investors represented about 70% of total sukuk issuance and it was 10 times oversubscribed.
In recent years, sovereigns, multilateral development bank and multinational corporations have raise funds in Malaysia. The Malaysian marketplace for Islamic finance is well supported by a deep primary market and active secondary market trading for sukuk issuances, as well as efficient price discovery and the availability of expertise in this market. Emas sukuk have been issued in various currencies namely US Dollar, Singapore Dollar and Renminbi.
