BRUSSELS(Dow Jones)--The European Union Friday lifted sanctions on 28 Libyan companies in an effort to support the rebel forces that have taken control of Tripoli and overthrown the regime of Moammar Gadhafi.

The companies named include National Commercial Bank, Gumhouria Bank, Sahara Bank, Sirte Oil Company, Waha Oil Company and Libyan Arab Airlines. The port authorities of Tripoli, Al Khoms, Brega, Ras Lanuf, Zawia and Zuwara are also on the list, which was published in the EU's Official Journal.

Libya's biggest oil company, the National Oil Corporation, isn't on the list because it is subject to sanctions from the United Nations, not the EU.
