Householders in Ajman who do not pay their sewerage connection fees and service charges are to have their electricity cut off.

Ajman Sewerage Company has sent an ultimatum to hundreds of tenants and property owners through Ajman Municipality saying that their electricity supply will be disconnected within a week if they fail to settle their accounts.

The letters were sent by the municipality's Sewer Tarriff Officer on behalf of the company, which was set up to build and operate Ajman's sewerage network.

Oliver Crasson, General Manager of Ajman Sewerage, did not respond to an inquiry by Emirates Business about the plan to disconnect electricity supplies.

But a senior call centre official said: "People in Ajman do not accept the fact that there are sewerage charges in the emirate. Many of the property owners and tenants are using the service but don't pay the service charge. We have sent them three reminders and now we have approached Ajman Municipality to disconnect electricity from tenants who don't pay sewerage charges."

The letter to householders says: "The company has advised us that your invoice has not been settled as of date. This obliges me to send you this final notice to advise you of your obligation to pay the invoice amount along with the penalty amount not later than seven days from the notice date. We request your attention to this notice so as to avoid any inconvenience resulting from electricity disconnection."

Customers can pay their bills at the company's offices, the municipality's planning department and the Land and Property Department. The sewerage project started in 2002 was expected to link 750,000 housing units and companies in the emirate.

Initially many property owners refused to pay the connection charges.
