DSOA Signs MoU with Universidad Politecnica de Madrid to Promote Collaboration in Smart City Concepts
Educational Programme to Develop Talent in the Field of Smart City Applications
Academics from Five Leading International Universities to Oversee Programme
Dubai-UAE: 30 April, 2014 - Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority ( DSOA ), the regulatory body for Dubai Silicon Oasis , Dubai's integrated free zone technology park, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Spain's Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) to promote technical and academic collaboration in smart city concepts.
Dr Mohammed Alzarooni, Vice Chairman and CEO of DSOA , signed the MoU with Prof Carlos Conde Lázaro, UPM President, at the university campus in Spain, Madrid.
As part of the agreement, UPM is set to offer a Master's in Smart City Sciences (MCS) a cutting-edge post-graduate programme in Smart City Concepts, through the Rochester Institute of Technology-Dubai.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of DSOA , said: "The signing of this agreement is in line with the DSOA 's core objective of playing a vital role in the implementation of the Smart Dubai Strategic Plan to transform Dubai into a smart city in the next three years as envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in March 2014. The academic program will help build and foster specialised skills in various areas related to smart cities."
Dr Mohammed Alzarooni, said: "The true indicator of a nation's development is the progress of its science and technology domains. At DSOA , we have always aimed at adopting and introducing advanced sustainable innovations for enhanced urban living. We are happy to collaborate with UPM and explore possibilities for mutually beneficial projects. We are confident that the infrastructural advantages of DSOA and RIT-Dubai expertise will complement the academic know-how of UPM and, together, we will effectively empower community with the skill-sets needed for today's urban environment."
The agreement will additionally catalyse the exchange of best practices in entrepreneurial and start-up incubation programmes, besides facilitating interaction among academic and technical staff. The two entities will engage in collaborative research, host joint symposia and exchange lectures, while exploring possibilities for cooperative research on projects of mutual interest.
Prof Dr Carlos Conde Lázaro, UPM President, said: " Dubai Silicon Oasis is an ideal model of futuristic, sustainable urban living where technology and human capital converge to create a unique environment of learning and development. UPM is extremely pleased to exchange competencies with DSOA , and collaborate in its efforts to pioneer projects that are certain to redefine the concept of urban planning at a regional and global level."

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, or The Technical University of Madrid, is the oldest and largest of Spain's technical Universities, with most of its Schools dating back over a 100 years, to the 18th and 19th centuries and existing independently until they were grouped together as UPM in 1973. With 35,000 students attending classes every year, UPM is also part of the TIME network, which groups 50 engineering schools throughout Europe.
