28 May 2010

BEIRUT: Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil said Thursday that Electricite du Liban (EDL) will cut the power supplies of politicians on June 1 if they don’t settle their unpaid bills.

EDL staff have called all the politicians and influential figures who failed to pay their bills for many years and warned them that the company could cut off electricity,” Bassil said in press conference.

He added that after the first warning was issued a few months ago, only 23 percent of these politicians warned paid their bills to EDL .

“These politicians and influential figures have all the financial means to pay their bills and they have no excuse not to do so,” Bassil said.

He added some these politicians complained they actually paid all their dues to EDL .

“I will give the courts one month to verify these complains but if the courts found out that they did not pay their bills then EDL will take action and if their complains were legitimate then the company will not cut off power supply,” the minister said.

He called on those who feel that they have been treated unjustly to file a written complain to EDL .

Bassil stressed that in addition to politicians, there is a big number of institutions and tourist centers which also failed to pay their bills.

He urged the citizens to report any person or group involved in electricity theft and to call 01/560000 to press charges. – The Daily Star
