Foreign husbands' residency 'falls short'

24 April 2010

BEIRUT: The Cabinet’s recent decision to grant foreign husbands residency after one year of marriage was a “courtesy” move that fell short of addressing key women’s demands, an advocacy group said Friday. The campaign “My Nationality: A Right for Me and My Family,” was responding to the Cabinet’s decision this week to approve a draft decree allowing foreigners married to Lebanese women to obtain a residency permit after one year of marriage, while their children, whether adults or minors, would be able to receive a three-year residency permit. The group complained that the move ignored the right of men married to Lebanese women to work in Lebanon. – The Daily Star
