Hassan closes workshop with call for financial market
18 June 2010
BEIRUT: Finance Minister Raya Hassan said on Thursday that the creation of a financial market in Lebanon will highly contribute to expanding the Lebanese economy.
“It will help the private and public sectors in implementing new projects by opening the way for additional funding in order to support SMEs and individual initiatives,” she said.
Her remarks came during the closing session of the two-day workshop held at the Grand Serail with the aim of assessing the current situation of capital markets in Lebanon in order to suggest a set of recommendations for the development of BSE in compliance with international standards.
Hassan added that the ratification of a new law would not be enough and that further steps must be taken. “Long term investments must be encouraged such as creating investment funds,” she said. She emphasized the need to work in cooperation with the banking sector to encourage private companies and organizations to list their stocks on the Beirut Stock Exchange (BSE).
