TV station chiefs discuss reform of audiovisual law

13 August 2010

BEIRUT: Heads of Lebanese television stations held a meeting with the National Audiovisual Media Council Thursday to tackle modernizing the audiovisual media law. The current law was issued in 1994, but can no longer meet the needs of the modern media, according to council president Abdel-Hadi Mahfouz, who said a media draft law was being discussed in Parliament. The participants prepared for a law-amendment workshop, and stressed the need to form an audiovisual union and regulate the work of journalists working in the audiovisual media. They also raised the issue of financial losses suffered by Lebanese media institutions, after advertisements for herbal medications were banned. – The Daily Star
