Lebanese delegation returns with black box from jet crash in Iraq

08 February 2011

BEIRUT: A delegation from Lebanon’s Civil Aviation General Directorate returned to Lebanon at dawn Monday after a short visit to Iraq where they received the black box of a private jet that crashed last week, killing seven people, including three Lebanese.

Rafik Hariri International Airport president Daniel Haibi and civil aviation experts Omar Qadouha and Edward Zabloski returned from northern Iraq’s Sulaimaniyah after being briefed on preliminary probes carried out by the Iraqi Civil Aviation authorities to reveal the full details of the crash, said the National News Agency.

Seven people were killed when the private jet – which was carrying associates of Iraqi-British businessman Basil Mahdi Rahim – crashed last Friday night.

The Lebanese victims were named as businessman Abdullah Lahoud, from Amchit, Jbeil, co-pilot Abdullah Yazbeck, who was from Hawsh al-Rafka, Bekaa and air hostess Stephanie Luca, from Batroun.

The other dead were shareholders and technicians with telecommunications firm Asiacell.

A source from Rafik Hariri airport told The Daily Star Sunday that the private jet had crashed after its engine had failed.

The black box of the U.S.-made Hawker 850 will be sent to the U.S. Tuesday or Wednesday where its approximately 1,100 statements will be analyzed.

The source said Lebanon would either send Qadouha or Captain Mohammad Aziz, a pilot with Middle East Airlines, to the U.S. to follow up on the investigations.

The source said the aircraft had been registered with Lebanon’s Civil Aviation since mid-2010 under the names of Basil Rahim, Abdullah Youssef Lahoud and two other businessmen.

The statements of the black box will be analyzed by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. Preliminary investigations are expected to take around two weeks, said the NNA.

The source told The Daily Star that a detailed report including results of the probes would be forwarded to Iraqi and Lebanese authorities.

In other news, Lahoud was laid to rest Monday in his hometown of Amchit. Funeral services were led by Bishop Roland Abu Jawdeh, on behalf of Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Nasrallah Butros Sfeir.

Representatives of President Michel Sleiman, caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri along with an array of ministers, state officials and diplomats attended the prayers.

Lahoud, 32, is the son of the former Director General of Civil Aviation Youssef Lahoud. Yazbeck and Luca were buried Sunday.

Rahim was also buried Monday, in Tayouneh near Beirut. – The Daily Star
