'Tourism to account for 19.2 percent of Jordan's GDP'

BEIRUT: The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) expected the tourism sector to account for 19.2 percent of Jordan's GDP in 2008 and to rise to 21 percent of GDP in 2018, as reported by the Country Risk Weekly Bulletin, the economic publication of the Byblos Bank Group . It forecast the broad tourism and travel economy to generate demand of $3.2 billion in 2008, growing to $7.1 billion in 2018. It projected the sector's real growth rate at 4.9 percent in 2008 and to average 4.9 percent during the 2009-18 period. The WTTC said business travel should generate $286 million this year, growing by 4.1 percent annually to reach $484 million in 2018, while personal travel and tourism should generate $855 million in 2008 and grow by a yearly average of 3 percent to $1.5 billion in 2018. It estimated capital investment in the travel and tourism economy at $743 million in 2008 and at $1.6 billion within 10 years. It also forecast the export of tourism services at $2.5 billion this year and at $5.1 billion in 2018, posting a real annual growth of 4.3 percent over the 2009-18 period. - The Daily Star
