Cultured fish produced in Iran from freshwaters reached 380,000 tons last year (ended March 20, 2013), which is 13 percent higher than the goal set for the period, said director general of the Office for Developing Aquatic Resources and Freshwater Fish.
Morteza Afrasiabi added that 153,525 tons and 129,153 tons of the total figure pertain to warm and cold water fish harvested respectively, adding that 42,030 tons of fish were farmed, ISNA reported.
He noted that 147 million ornamental fish were produced during the period as well.
The official said a major part of cold water fish was consumed domestically during the period while warm water fish have many customers in neighboring countries.
Afrasiabi went on to say that about 380,000 tons of cultured fish are expected to be produced in the current year.
"About 5 percent and 40 percent of domestically-produced cold water and warm water fish are expected to be exported respectively in the current year," he said.
