The Bahrain-based Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions has announced the appointment of Dr Khaled al-Fakih as its new secretary general yesterday.
The body, established to develop and issue standards for the international Islamic finance industry, has been without a SG since Mohammed Nedal Alchaar was whisked away for national service as Syria's minister of economy & trade in April (see Issue 10).
Al-Fakih holds a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Saint Joseph, Beirut, Lebanon, and an MBA in Banking and Finance. He also holds a host of accountancy qualifications including FRM, CMA, CIA and CFSA and has worked extensively in an academic capacity in Lebanon to promote the development of Islamic finance. He currently heads Bank Audi's group Islamic banking operations.
He said in a statement: "I look forward to working with AAOIFI Board of Trustees, standards boards and institutional members to ensure that AAOIFI standards support the growth of the industry."
