Dubai: Abu Dhabi International is expanding with the construction of the Midfield Terminal Building (MTB), the future home of Etihad Airways.

Operator Abu Dhabi Airports released new images on Monday of the construction of the Dh10.38 billion terminal that is being built by a three-way joint venture between Dubai-listed Arabtec, Greece’s Consolidated Contractors Company and Turkey’s TAV.

Once complete, the terminal will be capable of handling 30 million passengers a year and will be used by hub carrier Etihad and the airlines it holds stakes in that fly to Abu Dhabi.

In August, Abu Dhabi Airports revealed that the project was 55 per cent complete and was expected to be 70 per cent complete by year-end.

The terminal will open in phases from July 2017 and be fully operational by the end of 2017, Abu Dhabi Airports chairman, Ali Majid Al Mansour, told Gulf News in March.

Work linking the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway is also currently taking place with flyovers being built.

The Dh10.8 billion MTB is part of a wider ten-year (2009-2019) billion airport expansion plan expected to cost between Dh37 billion and Dh40 billion.
